Calgary's Festival for Emerging Artists

Open The Door To

Founded in 2005 by Sage Theatre's Artistic Director Kelly Reay and Artistic Associates Adrienne Smook and Geoffery Ewert, IGNITE! began with a mission "to inspire and nurture the next generation of artists."

The Pumphouse Theatre has been on-board since the inaugural Festival as a dedicated co-producer. What started primarily as a theatre festival has expanded to offer meaningful opportunities for up-and-coming artists in the disciplines of dance, visual art and music. IGNITE! now features the work of over 100 emerging artists (including actors, directors, playwrights, designers, technicians, choreographers, dancers, visual artists and musicians), working with the support of professional mentors from the artistic community to create new work and showcase their skills.

A roundup of the 2008 festival in FFWD Magazine acknowledged the key role Sage Theatre plays in the development of Calgary's artistic talent: "IGNITE! is not just about showing promise, but displaying it, and the effect has been universally optimistic.... If the IGNITE! festival is what Calgary's talent is capable of when it's emerging, then its future endeavours will be remarkable."The Festival takes place in the 60 seat Joyce Doolittle Theatre and the 250 seat Victor Mitchell Theatre and is created in partnership with the Pumphouse Theatre Society.

Through the IGNITE! Festival, Sage Theatre continues to deliver on the commitment to nurture the artists who will be at the heart of Calgary's creative future.

Celebrating Success!

For the 2010/11 Season we were pleased to program a new Canadian play written by Festival alumna, Meg Braem. Her play BLOOD received additional workshop time with Alberta Playwrights Network Spring 2010, in readiness for the main-stage season opener, September 2010.
